WHY Mobile Event Businesses are Exploding in Popularity

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’re likely well aware of the serious changes happening around the globe, across industries as we business owners try to adapt to the new mid/ post COVID-19 regulations.

Not only do we want to remain compliant to avoid fines and to keep our doors open, but we also feel a huge obligation as society members to reduce the spread of the virus as much as possible, while still meeting the demand for our services (you know, to pay our bill and continue making a living).

One way I have already seen the party and event industry shift is that MOBILE event services are becoming more popular.

People feel safer either celebrating birthdays and other milestones in their home or in more remote venues, rather than gathering a large group inside the traditional event spaces we’ve seen.

Not only are regulations fewer in outdoor spaces or at peoples homes (masks and distancing, for example), but people will just be feeling much safer in their homes or outdoors for quite a while.

People have more control over their home environment and can ensure proper cleaning practices, whereas with a third party venue they’d need to have a certain level of trust in their processes (knowing that they host many other events with many persons unknown to them in and out of their doors constantly).

With these non-traditional venues becoming more popular for more and move events, hosts feel underprepared and overwhelmed attempting to provide a memorable experience for their family and friends while also maintaining their own sanity.

Perhaps their homes lack the furniture or space for a gathering, or maybe the decor feels impossible to pull off for someone who has never coordinated and put together an important event before.

Regardless of the reasoning, we have ALREADY seen a BOOM in mobile services.

Balloon delivery, yard signage, outdoor foodtrucks, tent and table rentals, and more are all items in major demand.

And even outside of the party and event industry, mobile services are increasing to meet this “safer-at-home” trend. 

Tutors, hairstylists, restaurants, and more are all increasing their mobile and delivery services and are branching out to meet their clients where they feel safest.

I have found that it’s very common for ambitious entrepreneurs to bite off more than they can chew and instead of having dozens of happy customers ready to recommend them from the rooftops for their go-to service or product, they instead have a slew of frustrated or indifferent clients because they spread themselves TOO THINLY.

I highly recommend doing competitive analysis and choosing ONE focus you think could marry both your strengths and passions AND your area’s need-- then expanding from there.

 Here’s a quick summary of the 6 types of business focuses you can choose from to start with:

1) Play

Here I’m referring to mobile soft play areas, mobile activities for children to do, things like that.

 

    • Pros: 
      • This service is VERY in demand and not a lot of people are doing it (yet!)
      • Equipment is reusable and durable 
      • Equipment is to clean, putting parents’ minds at ease
    • Con: 
      • There will still be COVID-19 concerns with any close-play activity
      • You will need to invest in transportation (either something temporary like a U-Haul truck or trailer, or purchasing a truck or trailer)
      • You will likely need a tent and flooring if you plan on setting up outside, to protect the children (and your equipment!) from the elements

2) Decorating

Here I’m referring to party decorators like balloon artists, people who put together tablescapes, florists, and more. I actually started as a wedding coordinator that would help purchase and set up decorations at outdoor wedding venues!

Balloon art is extremely popular right now and something you can at least get started learning on YouTube!

    • Pros: 
      • You can span your service across event types (wedding showers, baby showers, weddings, birthdays)
      • You won’t need much transportation to start
      • Your investment will generally be lower to get started especially if you choose something versatile like balloon art
    • Cons:
      • You will likely need to purchase a lot of decor specific to themes and colors (unless you choose something more versatile to focus on)
      • Decorating can be stressful! Clients likely have a strong vision in mind and catering to specific requests (and outdoor setups in the elements) takes time and practice

3) Event planning

Think Jennifer Lopez in The Wedding Planner. But for any event!

    • Pros:
      • This choice has the lowest start up cost-- you can get started with just $200 (for a LLC or DBA and a quick logo and website!)
      • This is a great focus f you are organized and detail oriented
      • You won’t need equipment or transportation for equipment (just yourself!)
      • This is a great way to get your foot in the door and create good relationships with venues and others in the event industry
    • Cons:
      • Coordinating events can be stressful (I started off working with brides-- just imagine the pressure of people the point-person making sure the most important day of someone’s life goes off without a hitch-- I have nightmares just thinking about my early days!)
      • Event venues aren’t going to be fully booked for a while, so the need for event coordinators is not as high as other categories
      • Hiring an event coordinator is more of a convenience than a necessity for an event, and we are currently heading into a recession. While some may still be able to afford luxuries, demand for this category may not pick back up until the economy recovers and people feel more certain about their finances

4) Catering

In this category I’m referring to food trucks, coffee carts, mobile champagne carts, things like that!

 

    • Pros:
      • This theme is very trendy and in-style right now (just take a look over on Pinterest!)
      • This option is portable and versatile and, like decorating, can be spanned across many different event types in different areas
      • There can be a bigger market depending on what specific niche you choose ( for example, my client Tasha has a cotton candy cart, and she caters to events ranging from birthday parties to festivals to corporate events!)
    • Cons: 
      • Because of the food and drink component, this may require extra licenses and insurance
      • You will need to purchase inventory ahead of time, which is a direct cost and which will be wasted if you overestimate your needs
      • There will likely be a larger start up  cost in this category because of the equipment and materials

5) Rentals

Think chairs, tables, tents-- that sort of thing.

    • Pros:
      • There is a large market for these rentals and they are incredible versatile
      • Demand will be especially high if you live in an area where people celebrate outside a lot
      • This category is easy to get started, and you can re-use items again and again unlike in the decorating category (you can re-use some decor, but some will be event-specific)
    • Cons:
      • This is expensive up front-- you’ll need to buy enough tables and chairs and a large enough tent to cater to a variety of event sizes
      • You will need to invest in transportation-- this stuff takes up SPACE!
      • You will need several people to help-- the larger tens typically require 2-5 people to set up and tear down
      • Choosing this category may result in LONG days or events spanning several days. For example, you may need to set up on a Friday for a wedding that takes place on  a Saturday, not being able to pick up until Sunday 

6) Entertainment

Think Balloon twisting, princess visits, face painting, story times, babysitting a group of children at a wedding or corporate event, etc.

    • Pros: 
      • This category is easy to get started in and generally inexpensive
      • You likely won’t need much transportation 
      • This is another widely applicable category! Every event needs entertainment of some form!
    • Cons: 
      • You need to have or develop some sort of skill
      • If it’s just you, there’s a ceiling to how much you can make unless you train others to “be the talent” as well

 

As you can see, there are MANY choices when you are just getting started.

And again, I highly recommend doing competitive analysis and choosing ONE focus you think could marry both your strengths and passions AND your area’s need-- then expanding from there.
